EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
