A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
